Action Research and Advocacy for “Precious”
What ARE the real issues affecting teen girls and young women? After reading the novel Push, we (the members of Crittenton Services of Greater Washington’s Youth Advisory Board), also known as Our Voices, identified the issues that affected the life of the main character, Clareece “Precious” Jones:
- Powerlessness, lack of self worth, no voice
- Physical, emotional and sexual abuse
- Mental and physical health problems
- Lack of future expectations, no goals, no motivation
- And the importance of caring, trusted adults and teachers who go the extra mile
We believe that Precious’s challenges are not that different from situations other teen girls and young women in our communities face every day. We decided to do something. To start we developed a Precious Voices survey. What challenges do you think teen girls and young women face?
